Weeks of training will culminate this Sunday 5/22 as @EagleRockElem girls will run the @GOTRLA 5k

Girls on the Run of Los Angeles will host their annual Family 5k event on Sunday, May 22. Please remember that this is a family fun run/walk and we encourage everyone to come and finish at your own happy pace. Training for a 5K is a huge accomplishment and we hope to see all of you at the finish line. Congratulations on your training and best of all, have a fun!

The event officially kicks off at 8 am. This includes late registration, bib pick up for all, face painting, happy (washable) hair spray, temporary tattoos and more. We will have refreshments after so plan to have breakfast before you come. Perhaps something light such as toast with nut butter and a banana with a beverage instead of a stack of pancakes with eggs, potatoes and sausages!

If you are planning to participate on Sunday, we encourage you to come dressed in attire and shoes that will comfortably support your running/walking for 3.1 miles! There will be one water stop on the course and you should also feel free to bring your own water bottle.

Each team will have two signs, one hand held and one attached to the fence where all teams will meet, so please look for the Eagle Rock Elementary sign and meet us there no later than 9 am. The run/walk will begin promptly at 9:30 am in 4 waves; we are in wave #3 which starts at 9:40 am. Please, please do not wait until the very last minute to find us.

5K LOCATION:
Legg Lake, Whittier Narrows Recreation Area (751 S. Santa Anita Ave, South El Monte, 91733)
  • Enter “Area D” Picnic Area 9
  • PARKING: Limited FREE parking in main lot, $6 overflow lot. With 1,500 attendees, we recommend you arrive early!

EVENT DAY TIMELINE:
8:00 – Registration and Bib Pick Up begin
8:00 – All activities open (face painting, happy hair, bib decorating, etc)
9:15 – Group stretching and warm up sponsored by ASICS (activities close)

LA welcomes 65,000 lbs of @NASA #SpaceShuttle History as tank crawls to @CAScienceCenter @NASAJPL_Edu

History is being made this weekend as the last-existing, flight-qualified external fuel tank for NASA's Space Shuttle Program makes a 16.5-mile crawl through the streets of Los Angeles to its new home at the California Science Center. On Saturday, May 21, the tank, a nearly 154-foot long, more than 65,000-pound behemoth dubbed ET-94, will be towed from the port in Marina del Rey (where it arrived after another epic voyage) to the science center. Eventually, it will be displayed with the space shuttle Endeavour and two solid rocket boosters in launch configuration – looking like it's ready to blast into space. (MORE)

#FREE Boat Tours of the Port of Los Angeles this Saturday (5/21 10a-3p) @PortofLA @red_tricycle

Giving the local community an opportunity to see a working port up-close and in action, the Port of Los Angeles (America's Port) will be hosting its second annual Waves ‘N’ Wheels event on the LA Waterfront from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. on May 21. With activities scheduled in both San Pedro and Wilmington, the event will feature free public boat tours and unique displays of Port vehicles and equipment - from massive cargo ships to tugs, to giant cranes and alternative-fuel vehicles, and more.

The Port of Los Angeles is the busiest container port in the nation. The furniture and electronics in your home, the car you drive, and the clothing and shoes that you wear most likely came through the Port of Los Angeles!  There is nothing like the experience of pulling up next to a massive container ship as it unloads hundreds of containers, or seeing the world’s largest container facility that, at nearly 500 acres, is three times the size of Disneyland, and sits on a man-made island built from Catalina Island stones and material dredged from the bottom of our channels.

Waves 'N' Wheels
Saturday, May 21, 2016 (10:00a-3:00p)
Location 1: Banning's Landing (100 E Water St, Wilmington, CA 90744)
Location 2: Downtown Harbor (504 S Harbor Blvd, San Pedro, CA 90731)

Newton's Law (Force = mass x acceleration) and TIE Fighters #StarWarsDay @NASAJPL_Edu

The TIE (Twin Ion Engine) fighter is a staple of the "Star Wars" universe. Darth Vader flew one in "A New Hope." Poe Dameron piloted one in "The Force Awakens." And many, many Imperial pilots met their fates in them. While the fictional TIE fighters in "Star Wars" flew a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, ion engines are a reality in this galaxy today – and have a unique connection to NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

Launched in 1998, the first spacecraft to use an ion engine was Deep Space 1, which flew by asteroid 9969 Braille and comet Borrelly. Fueled by the success of Deep Space 1, engineers at JPL set forth to develop the next spacecraft that would use ion propulsion. This mission, called Dawn, would take ion-powered spacecraft to the next level by allowing Dawn to go into orbit twice – around the two largest objects in the asteroid belt: Vesta and Ceres...more

We'd like to say THANKS to all of our teachers/staff @EagleRockElem for all that you do!

National Teacher Appreciation Week runs May 2-6 and is a great time to slow down and spend a moment to show your thanks to your child's teacher(s)!

Did you know the NEA is teaming up with the National PTA and Go Fund Me to give back to the educators who give so much to our communities? If you start a campaign to benefit a teacher or a classroom during Teacher Appreciation Week (May 2-6, 2016), GoFundMe will chip in a $100 donation to help you build momentum. So what are you waiting for? Find out more here.
