Unassigned Day Thursday, 9/25 | Happy New Year to members of our Jewish Community #RoshHashanah

School will be closed this Thursday, September 25 and classes will resume on Friday, September 26th. September 25th is also "Rosh Hashanah" which is the Jewish New Year. It is the first of the High Holy Days or Yamim Nora'im ("Days of Awe") which usually occur in the early autumn of the Northern Hemisphere and is a two-day celebration, which begins on the first day of Tishrei. Rosh Hashanah customs include sounding the shofar (a hollowed-out ram's horn) and eating symbolic foods such as apples dipped in honey to evoke a "sweet new year".

the Autumnal #Equinox occurred here in Los Angeles on Monday, September 22, 2014 at 7:29pm

There are two equinoxes every year – in September and March – when the sun shines directly on the equator and the length of day and night is nearly equal.

The Earth's axis is always tilted at an angle of about 23.5° in relation to the ecliptic, the imaginary plane created by the Earth's path around the Sun. However, the tilt's orientation changes throughout the year. On any other day of the year, the Earth's axis tilts a little away from or towards the Sun. But on the two equinoxes, the Earth's axis tilts neither away from nor towards the Sun and is perpendicular to the Sun's rays, like the illustration shows.

09/14/1814 Francis Scott Key pens poem that later becomes our #NationalAnthem

Two hundred years ago last Sunday, on September 14, 1814, U.S. soldiers at Baltimore’s Fort McHenry raised a huge American flag to celebrate a crucial victory over British forces during the War of 1812. The sight of those “broad stripes and bright stars” inspired Francis Scott Key to write a song that eventually became the United States national anthem. Key’s words gave new significance to a national symbol and started a tradition through which generations of Americans have invested the flag with their own meanings and memories.

The day we set aside to commemorate the creation and signing of the U.S. Constitution

The Constitution was signed by thirty-nine delegates of the people on September 17, 1787 and became the foundation upon which our government was built. Constitution Day is intended to remind everyone of the principles we hold dear. It’s an opportunity for people to demonstrate their appreciation for our country and the freedom that was secured by our founding fathers.
