Today (Monday 1/19) we observe the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr and his Quest for #Equality Martin Luther King, Jr. was instrumental in getting the Civil Rights Act of 1964 passed. That law made it illegal to treat people differently because of the color of their skin. In 1964 he won the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts. That same year, he was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee. Our country is celebrating his birthday on January 19. Check out these resources, activities, and lesson plans to learn more about him and the quest for equality:
School holiday when we honor all the men and women veterans of all wars-Thanks for your service! There will be no school tomorrow, Tuesday, November 11 in observance of Veterans Day. Veterans Day originated as “Armistice Day” on Nov. 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and Nov. 11 became a national holiday beginning in 1938. Veterans Day is not to be confused with Memorial Day–a common misunderstanding, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Memorial Day (the fourth Monday in May) honors American service members who died in service to their country or as a result of injuries incurred during battle, while Veterans Day pays tribute to all American veterans–living or dead–but especially gives thanks to living veterans who served their country honorably during war or peacetime.
