Longest Night occurs on 12/21 | 1st Day of Winter in Northern Hemisphere & Summer in Southern

Earth's axis of rotation is tilted 23.5°. That makes the latitudes of +23.5° and −23.5° special. But how? You may have noticed two special lines of latitude on a globe of the world: One in the Northern Hemisphere called the Tropic of Cancer at +23.5° latitude and one in the Southern Hemisphere called the Tropic of Capricorn at − 23.5° latitude.

These are the latitudes where the Sun is directly overhead at noon once a year. In the Northern hemisphere, on the Tropic of Cancer, that is the Summer Solstice, usually June 21. In the Southern Hemisphere, on the Tropic of Capricorn, that is the Winter Solstice, usually December 21. These solstice days are the days with the most (for Summer) or fewest (for Winter) hours of sunlight during the whole year.

K-3 #EagleRockElem student performances (9-10 & 1:30-2:30) 12/18 @ Auditorium | Plan to attend

Thursday, Dec 18th is our Winter Program for parents of K-3. Choose either 9:00-10:00am or 1:30-2:30pm. Please plan on staying for the whole show.

Additionally, our Orchestra will present a program in January or February; this Thursday, Dec 18th there will be music activities with Mr. Martinez in the MPR for students since Auditorium is being used.

December 17, 1903 #WrightBrothers demonstrate sustained flight under pilot control for 852 feet

Through their own research and experimentation, and by studying the attempts of other would-be pilots, the Wright brothers knew that heavier-than-air flight was possible. They corresponded frequently with engineer Octave Chanute, a friend and supporter of their work.

On the morning of December 17, 1903, Wilbur and Orville Wright took turns piloting and monitoring their flying machine in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina. Orville piloted the first flight that lasted just 12 seconds and 120 feet. On the fourth and final flight of the day, Wilbur traveled 852 feet, remaining airborne for 59 seconds. That morning, the brothers became the first people to demonstrate sustained flight of a heavier-than-air machine under the complete control of the pilot.

Annual Holiday Luncheon | Friday, December 12 11:30am - 1:30pm in MPR #EagleRockElem

Lunches will be held from 11:30 am – 1:30 pm for teachers and staff to enjoy during their lunch periods.

Our annual Holiday Luncheon will be held Friday, December 12. This is a wonderful time to show our hard-working teachers, administrative and support staff how much we appreciate them. The teachers and staff always enjoy the dishes our families bring. You can bring your dish to the Teachers’ Lounge in the morning when you drop off your children. Please label your dish with its name, your name and the teacher’s name. Label your serving utensils with your name and child’s room number as well. If you’d like to help before, during, or after the luncheon, please leave a note in the PTA box at the main office or in the Parent Center. All paper goods and drinks are provided by the PTA. To ensure we have enough dishes for both lunch periods, we ask that you fill out the tear-off below and return it to school by Wednesday, December 10.
