next Wednesday, September 23, 2015, all #LASchools will be closed for an Unassigned Day | #YomKippur Yom Kippur marks one of the most important days of the year in the Jewish faith. This year, the holiday begins at sundown on Sept. 22 and continues until the following day, Sept. 23, at nightfall. In the Hebrew calendar, the holiday falls on the 10th of the month of Tishrei. Jews recognize Yom Kippur as the culmination of the 10 Days of Awe that began on the Jewish New Year, or Rosh Hashanah. For Jews, the day is very solemn and known as the Day of Atonement -- a time to reflect on sins committed in the last year and repent. On Yom Kippur, Jews also take the time to mourn the losses of loved ones. http://www.ibtimes.com/when-yom-kippur-2015-guide-jewish-day-atonement-2094755

9/15-10/15 | celebrate the history, music, art & stories of the Hispanic & Latino people Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988, on the approval of Public Law 100-402. The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September18, respectively. Also, Columbus Day or Día de la Raza, which is October 12, falls within this 30 day period.
